Luck By Chance!!

Today I saw “Luck by Chance”; except for the name the director has not left anything to chance to make this movie a good watch. I would say that this is really close to the Indian film industry, though with my limited knowledge of this industry I do feel that the reality is changing.

Coming back to the movie, I would say that the best part of it has been its screenplay and definitely some great performances. The first performance which remains in mind after “The End” is of Konkana Sen Sharma as the struggling actress - Sona Mishra. Miss Sharma is no doubt is fabulous in her act and anchored the movie right from the first scene till the end. The other performance worthy of mention is that of great Rishi Kapoor. Mr. Kapoor has proved that cinema is in the lineage of Kapoors and it cannot get thin with age. Hats off to Mr. Rishi Kapoor for the beautiful portrayal of “Romy Rolly”! Infact all the actors played their role the way it was expected from them – nothing more nothing less.

The story which moored around the struggle of all those related to the film industry – from a spot boy to the big producer and financiers, reflects the dirt and anguish and at the same time their everlasting desire to taste the success – the desire which keeps us all alive irrespective of our area of work. The desire to see oneself on the cover page of filmfare/screen with a cover story just makes people do all the things they would have otherwise never think of. This movie is not in the class of typical masala movie, but to be frank I never expected Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut to be a cliché. She has rendered a beautiful mix of reality with the touch of commercial tantrums (I think Hrithik Roshan’s dance number proves this point).

One would wonder why the mention of lead hero Mr. Farhan Akhtar is missing from the tale till now. Fact of the matter is that I am a bit disappointed from his portrayal as the struggling actor - Vikram Jai Singh. Its not that Mr. Akhtar has acted bad or that the characterisation was not good, I think my expectation after Rock On was a bit on a higher side. Mr. Akhtar I think could have added more zing to his role, to match the lady lead Miss Sharma. However, this is my personal opinion and surely not meeting my expectation is not the benchmark after all.

Now let’s come to the other finer aspects of the movie. Music from “Shankar, Ehsan, Loy” is good and some of the songs were picturised beautifully well particularly “Pyaar ki Daastan” is worth a watch. The one song of Mr. Roshan, in isolation looks more like an Item number, though in the movie it holds its ground perfectly and gels well with the story. I think the editing could have been tidier. The first half of movie is a bit of drag and could have been made crisper; some of the scenes are allowed to go on without it adding any significance to the main story. As I mentioned above, this is not the “Typical Indian Masala movie” and this is proved by the end, which according to me was different – at least to my expectation.

I would strongly recommend the last 5-7 minutes of this movie for everyone, not for the performance or scene but for the great dialogues penned by Farhan Akhtar. The message given in the last is definitely the take home for all viewers. I don’t intend to look out for any moral standpoint from any Indian commercial movie, but if it comes then we should accept it and honour it.

It's definitely a one-time watch.

  1. right.according to me-the best part was when konkana sen sharma asks about her existence in farhan's life.so in that way i feel shahrukh teaching was a gr8 thing.

as the whole story was not focusing on farhan but his luck-tht's why i feel it's named luck by chance.else u see his another theatre friend was better actor.

so let's better call it a reel life based on real life struggle.after all,all the movies don't turn out to be Rock On or Kaho Na Pyar Hai kind.

:)nice write up!Still I feel Luck By Chance holds it's own place where all big and small charecters are given it's due importance.and among all of them if you look at farhan,as in lead role,i would feel disappointed.although it had one of the highest no. of SPECIAL THANKS list.

but you see script demand was that.

    cheers :)
